About the project

This project aims to expand Zenzeleni Community Network's services to Mgcibe and Ntshilini, two neighboring villages of Mankosi, where Zenzeleni community network is based. It represents a critical step in our transition from a donor-funded initiative to a self-sustaining, community-driven Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Results

The project sought to leverage the existing network infrastructure in Mankosi to meet the growing demand for affordable connectivity in these underserved rural areas. Specifically, the project aimed to:

1. Install 15 new community Wi-Fi hotspots across the target villages
2. Train local hotspot hosts and voucher resellers to foster digital skills and entrepreneurship
3. Upgrade back-up power systems for two main gateways to ensure uninterrupted service
4. Enhance digital literacy in the communities through training and capacity building
5. Create economic opportunities for community members through network expansion

The Zenzeleni Community Connectivity Expansion project successfully extended affordable internet access to previously underserved communities in the Eastern Cape region of South Africa. Despite challenges with weather conditions, power infrastructure limitations, and exchange rate fluctuations affecting the budget, Zenzeleni Networks achieved their core objective of establishing 14 operational hotspots with the 15th scheduled for completion in April 2025.

This expansion has directly benefited over 500 community members, providing them with improved educational opportunities, access to digital services, and economic possibilities previously unavailable through affordable connectivity. Beyond the infrastructure development, the project created relatively sustainable livelihood opportunities through training local hotspot hosts and voucher resellers, fostering digital skills and entrepreneurship within these rural communities.

The strategic adaptations made during implementation, including geographic expansion to the greater Zithulele village, timeline adjustments, budget reallocations, and collaborative partnerships with Amadiba CN, have strengthened the project's impact and sustainability. 

Zenzeleni Network's technical team has gained valuable experience in overcoming rural connectivity challenges, from line-of-sight complications to power supply issues, developing innovative solutions that will inform future expansion efforts.

Changes and challenges

The project faced several challenges, including:

Weather: Heavy storms and rainfall caused delays and safety concerns.

Line of sight: Unexpected obstructions required tree removal.

Equipment configuration: Unforeseen issues with Unifi equipment required creative solutions.

Power infrastructure: Unsuitable power outlets and outages required adaptation and negotiation.

Tribal authority engagement: Obtaining approvals took longer than anticipated.

Transportation: A regional taxi strike disrupted travel between communities.

Despite these challenges, the team demonstrated adaptability and problem-solving, leading to successful project implementation. Lessons learned include the importance of weather resilience, detailed site surveys, community engagement, and robust backup power solutions.
